Neil G. Sowle, age 95, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan died on Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the Woodland Hospice House.
Funeral services for Neil will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 11 a.m. from the Rowley Funeral Home with Rev. Andrew Miller of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Interment will take place on Friday at 2 p.m. at Cherry Grove Cemetery in Clare, Michigan. The family will receive friends at the Rowley Funeral Home on Thursday, May 12 from 5-8 p.m. and again on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Neil was born in Clare, Michigan on May 26, 1920 to Harley and Sylva (Coe) Sowle. He married Mary (Fran) Fulenwider of Miami Springs, Florida on February 25, 1948. Neil attended Ferris State University and graduated from Tri State University, Angola, Indiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in radio engineering. He was a General Motors, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac and GMC Truck dealer for twenty years. Neil was a veteran of the Army Air Corp, serving as a Staff Sergeant in World War II and served thirty one months in Africa as a high speed Morse code operator and airport control officer. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant First Presbyterian Church where he served as both a trustee and an elder. Neil was a member of the Phi Sigma Chi Fraternity and as long as his health permitted, a member of the Houghton-Higgins Lake Elks Lodge and the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club. He was a long time member and past-president of the Mt. Pleasant Kiwanis Club.
Neil is survived by a daughter Patricia Sowle, son Donald (Gloria) Sowle and a daughter Diane Sowle. Also surviving are brothers, Gail Sowle and Lee (Margaret) Sowle. Neil’s grandchildren, Mark and Kristin Sowle, Katie (Tripp) VanderWal, Christina (fiancé Jason Schultz) Sowle and Nicole Bell, and his great grandchildren, Lucy, Emma, Will, Kyleigh and Kennedy. Neil was preceded in death by his wife Fran of sixty-six years, his parents Harley and Sylva Sowle and his sisters Maxine and Beverly.
As a memorial to Neil, friends have been asked to consider contributions to the First Presbyterian Church or Woodland Hospice.
